If sleep came simply.

Each night as I lay down

determined to let a night’s rest do its healing,

worry seems to always take hold and dig in its heels,

demanding I engage in the debate of what will be the one thing

that tips the scales of what I can and cannot handle,

of what I can and cannot control.

And each night, I imagine how it would be

if sleep came simply as with a lullaby,

and how it would feel to wake each day

with a mind unburdened by restlessness and hesitation.

I understand where this poem is coming from. Worry can be as persistent as a bulldog worrying a bone and fill the night with restlessness and hesitation, and if you are short of sleep, you can imagine
if sleep came simply as with a lullaby
